Quote: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15)

Dear Elders and Sisters,
We had a wonderful time with the new missionaries and the trainers the last two weeks. We felt a great excitement about the work. A great thanks to the Callisters and the Office Staff for doing all of the behind the scenes work to make the training possible. This week we say goodbye to the Mehrs. They have served selflessly and accomplished much. They will be missed.
In Preach My Gospel, Chapter 9 on finding, we find two important quotes. “Encourage [members] to visit acquaintances who have recently experienced a life-changing event (birth, death in the family, marriage, or recently moved).” and “Work with the bishop and the ward council to identify and contact people who have recently had a baby, moved to the area, or experienced a death in the family.” It is very important we are ready and use every opportunity to share the gospel when opportunities arise. The apostle Peter states this principle well, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15) Let us not let opportunities to teach pass us by to teach others the hope that comes through the Savior’s gospel. This week a recent convert, Natalya, passed away of cancer. She leaves behind an 8-year old daughter who also joined the church. Her passing is sad, but at the same time a joyful occasion. Her meeting with God after this life was joyful, because she had changed her life completely. She was not ready to meet God a year ago when the Sisters found her in a hospital. The Sisters were at the hospital to visit a sick member of the church and took the opportunity to share the gospel with Natalya. Natalya was open to the gospel message. It changed her completely. Before Natalya’s baptism she had made many poor life choices some of which had led to here terminal condition, but the atonement cleansed her. I am very grateful for Sister Missionaries who did not waste an opportunity to share the reason for the hope that was in them. The night before the funeral this week for Natalya, I felt compelled to take the opportunity to teach the plan of salvation to those at the services. Below is the text I sent. My hope is that you will not let any opportunity pass you by on your mission or after to give reason to the hope that is within you. We love you! Thanks for your service to God and His children.
Love,
President Packer

The Letter

extended MTC

Hi. I love you all and I have no time right now. But I am loving training so much because Sister Ivancovich is the cutest ever.My new companion is PERFECT for me. We get along so well and she is from CALIFORNIA like you Mom. We have mostly been in Kyiv for an extended MTC the President has done for us and it has been amazing.  We are traveling a lot right now. And we have had SO MUCH OPPOSITION to the work like SO much with the influx of new missionaries but it just shows we are on the right path and we are working really hard.   The mission is SO under attack from Satan right now and that has been kind of hard but it is ok. Everyone is saying no right now, even Larissa our investigator with a date. We will keep praying. We also have talked to so many people and not anyone has wanted to listen which is a hard welcome to Ukraine. But we love each other and we love these people and we will continue to push on because there is SOMEONE ready for this gospel. I feel so lucky that I get to see so many blessings from God from training even already and I am definitely coming closer to God as I pray even MORE! I love this work and I love doing my part.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!

Love you all!

Love

guess who came to see me in KYIV?!?!?

9/21/15

We were sitting in training in Kyiv when all of the sudden I got a text from Elder Kudibergen saying "Something to you came." And I was like ahhhh WHAT? AND SISTER FEDAS (my trainer) came into the room and she didn't know I wasn't blonde so she was bearing her testimony to the new missionaries and she was looking around for me and mid sentence she stopped and was wide mouth wide open and screamed because it has been so long since I saw her. She is still my hero and my most favorite Ukrainian ever. I HUGGED HER SO GOOD. And she was so excited I was training because she said I have been ready since week 6. I disagreed. But it was so fun for me to talk to her in ALL RUSSIAN. And we matched!!! BEST DAY EVER. I EVEN CRIED I WAS SO HAPPY!!!!

“The Spirit Teaches”
Ukraine Kyiv Mission
21 Sep 2015
“Quote: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Dear Elders and Sisters,
We have had such a great experience this last week with the arrival of our new missionaries. The energy and excitement to do the Lord’s work filled the office and we felt so blessed to be a part of it all.
We were reminded of a time when we had several missionaries in our home to teach a young woman from China who was living with us. She would be attending the University of Utah, and needed a place to live. She had chosen to come to Utah to get her master’s degree because of an experience she had at her university in China with a couple from Provo that were there to teach English. It is not allowed to share the gospel in China, but Ginny was drawn to this couple and they became friends. They told her about their family and home back in Utah and she was touched by the Spirit and knew they had something she wanted. We were so pleased to be able to have her in our home, and to have her become a part of our family. Ginny attended church with us and once again was touched by the spirit. She decided she would like to meet with the missionaries. She did not know who Jesus Christ is, but loved learning about new things, and this would be a good way to do that. Even though these missionaries were prepared, it was obvious to us that it was the Spirit that taught her. She joined the church and has remained faithful to those promptings, and the commitment she made a baptism. The missionaries presented the lessons, but the spirit did the teaching. As stated in Preach My Gospel on page 97, “As the Lord’s servants you are to do his work, in his way and by his power.... Your confidence and faith should be in Jesus Christ, not in yourself. Rely on the spirit rather than your own talents, and abilities. Trust the Spirit to guide you in every aspect of the work....Your task is to live worthily, pray fervently, and learn to recognize, and follow courageously the Spirit’s guidance. “
Many of you are new in the mission field, and may feel challenged by the language and the culture, but know that this is the Lord’s work, he will guide your footsteps as you pray for, and live worthy of his Spirit to be with you.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
The reward is sweet. The Lord has prepared each of you, and he has prepared those whom he has sent you here to teach. May the Spirit be your constant companion!

so lucky to be in Ukraine

6 MONTHS ALREADY?!?!? SAY WHAT. I love being a missionary more than words can express. There is nothing else I would trade in the world for this. NOTHING.

Thank you for praying so hard for me! I NEED ALL THE POWER from heaven I can get. Sometimes this work is pretty descouraging. But miracle of miracles Larissa came to church yesterday. Only 2 hours but we are working on it,.She is also trying to live the word of wisdom. It is hard. I have seen since we set a date for baptism that Satan has been working so hard on her and I am so afraid! We with Sister McDermott have been praying so hard for her. And as for that little boy Roma I talked about a bit last email, he kissed my cheek yesterday and I almost died. He said this little prayer at the end of a lesson, and my heart. I totally cried but he didn't see so it is ok. I love these people. Even in RUSSIAN which is just kicking my can. I love them. I am in Ukraine. It makes me cry. I am so lucky to be here.

We saw miracles this week with our investigators and with in ourselves and our companionship. ALSO the photo below is a picture of our English class. It went from 2-3 middle aged men to all these people plus more that left before the photo. In English we teach the gospel. And these people are elect! They are participate. They are from all different faiths, some even athiest and as we talk about faith and all the principles of the gospel they are opening up and discussing and sometimes I SEE REAL REVELATION happening in their eyes. Sometimes we just even get to bear our testimonies in Russian and read the scriptures together. They are incredible people and all from God's hand. This area is coming to life and I get to watch it bloom right before my eyes. God is so amazing. Teaching in this kind of group reminds me of the Book of Mormon, when they would just meet together in large groups and talk about the gospel and it would change the lives of many people at the same time. ISN'T THE GOSPEL AMAZING. JESUS CHRIST AND HIS ATONEMENT REALLY DO CHANGE LIVES. JUST look at these amazing people I LOVE SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!

I am so grateful for the change my mission is having on me.

I love you so much! This week was great. I have to go now! sorry the email is short. :)
SMILE. I LOVE YOU PEOPLE.
AND GOD LOVES YOU.

Love сестра кэррен 💋

Larissa our Baptismal Date Investigator

We committed her to live the Word of Wisdom and now she needs Your prayers because Satan is working hard to keep her from her baptism.  BUT SHE WANTS TO CHANGE.  I love her so much.

A cute member named Olya 17.  Her little brother is Roma.

The 9 year old love of my life that we are teaching. He kissed my cheek and I am ok with it.

I bought a balloon flower from a Babushka.

“Satisfy Him”
Ukraine Kyiv Mission
14 Sep 2015
“Quote: “How great is your calling!” Missionary Handbook pg.3
Dear Elders and Sisters,
You have been called by a prophet of God and set apart to represent the Lord Jesus Christ and His church. You have been called to “invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.”
We missed you while we were gone this last week to the mission president’s seminar. But we were richly fed by our area presidency. They are amazing, I spent the week in awe at their love for our Savior Jesus Christ. Their love for Eastern Europe and their hopes and wants for this area. They had prepared themselves well. The spirit was so strong and we left each day feeling inspired and excited to return home. The quote above comes from the Missionary Handbook. The only exclamation point in the entire handbook is "How great is your calling!”. Elders and Sister really how great is your calling! We have the opportunity to come and serve in this area for 18, 24, or 36 months. For some of you, today is your last day. We love you. We are so grateful for your service and your love to our Heavenly Father and the people of Ukraine. You will be missed. For the rest of us we are going to have an exciting week as we welcome 16 new missionaries to our mission (one broke his hand and will come in the next group). Our numbers will keep going up and we are so excited to welcome more missionaries to this area.
With new missionaries each of you will have some sort of added leadership put upon your shoulders. It is time to raise the bar. Are you ready? In the Europe East Area there are over 360 million people, over 900 missionaries serving, which when you calculate it out it leaves around 400,000 people to teach per missionary. To me this is mind blowing. For over 2700 years these people have been cut off from the words of the Lord. 25 years ago Ukraine was opened to the preaching of the gospel. It is a privilege to serve here at this time. As we all see and hear each Sunday the lost tribes are no longer lost. They are found in each of our branches. We need to point them to Jesus Christ. In our studies each day, do we realize the responsibility the Lord is trusting us with. Are you studying, praying, searching your scriptures? Is your companionship study focusing on finding, teaching and being prepared for who you might meet or teach? D&C 64:29

"Wherefore, as ye are agents, ye are on the Lord’s errand; and whatever ye do according to the will of the Lord is the Lord’s business." President Porter said “it is easy to please the Lord, but hard to satisfy Him” there is no time to be idle in this work or to feel frustrated. We get up each morning, we exercise, we eat, we get ourselves ready for the day, then we pray before we start our studies and ask, "what would the Lord have us do today? Where should we study?” President Klebingat said “if you want to talk to your Heavenly Father pray. If you want to hear your Heavenly Father, read your scriptures." Before you leave your apartments pray for added help, pray to find those who need Christ in their lives. Let them see your light. We are different, we look different, we have a message to share, so lets get to work.
We love you! Sister Packer

surprise?

Hi!

An update:
The bomb did NOTHING but make the pain a whole lot worse. It did not clear me out. BUT, I don't have parasites so that is a huge plus!
Sunday night I was in so much pain I woke up and just layed in my bed and cried. I said a little prayer and after my comp woke up and wanted to pray with me too. I was able to sleep and today I do not feel quite in so much pain. Which I am grateful for.
Thanks for the prayers and the love and all the fasting for me. I feel a bit better today and that is something I am so grateful for. Sometimes on our missions we have little bumps in the road like getting a really sick stomach, but we just work through it with patience and faith and Jesus Christ does help us. Thanks for all the prayers, it is helping me!

Also the baptism we were scheduled to have this week did not happen because this girl dropped of the face of the planet. It was really sad but she obviously did not want it because she has not been back to church in 5 weeks. I started to lose the faith that bapstim can really happen but I know that is only bad!!!! SO I WORKED ON IT.

This week I mostly want to focus on two things this week:

We taught a little boy this week who is 9. His family is members but is parents are completely inactive and have a hard time caring for their children. The church has not taken much time to make sure he got baptized either and so this week in district meeting God just straight up told me "Get Roma baptized. It is salvation." So we began working with him. I will tell you some detail about this boy I love so much.  He is malnurshed and unloved by many. He comes with dirty hands and a dirt little face. All it took to get this little boy to open up was to smile at him and tell him I loved him. He gave me the biggest squeeziest hug ever. I thought my heart would break. This is truly the kingdom of God on earth-His little children. So we have begun teaching him. And that is a blessing from God.

We also had an amazing lesson with an investigator named Larissa. She is 45 ish and an avid english comer and she really wants to change her life. She believes this is the right path and is willing to do anything to change. THIS IS REAL!!!! We set a date with her on Saturday night. October 3rd! Pray that she will be able to keep all commitments and to live the word of wisdom. It is going to be hard. But I HAVE FAITH THAT BAPTISM CAN REALLY HAPPEN!!! PLEASE PRAY FOR US AND FOR LARISSA.

Also..

though some of this week was really hard for me, I did get to LAUGH this week. My comp and I were at a less actives house. She is old and her house is a GIANT mess. I can not even begin to describe her home so that you can understand. But we love her. And she does NOT want us to clean her house. we were sitting in her little closet sized bed room with her friendly pigeons walking around the room knocking things over. There was mystery juice on the floor and we were just sitting there when suddenly a giant gust of wind came through the open window and pushed some very bird pooped stained curtains straight into the face of my companion. and luckily this women was turned around and speaking lots of Russian because I silenlty lost it. I could not stop laughing. I love this women but the bird poop curtians in my comps face were the last straw. I had to physically calm myself down I was laughing so hard- silently, but so hard.
that is my funny of the week. But I guess it also sounds kind of sad? dont worry it is just Ukraine and I love it.

also... had this crazy ukrainian day where we met this old women in a grocery store and she instantly just loved us so much. she was so old and in a sun dress and a sun hat and spoke so much russian and had the best little laugh. well we took her bags to her house and then she made us march around the city for a couple hours with her. it was SO much old lady russian and she would cling to my arm with her little arm as we walked across roads and she asked me to listen to her phone call she has to make and squished both of our heads under her sunhat and would scold me and also love me. I LOVE UKRAINIANS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST UKRAINIAN DAY AND SHE MADE ME LAUGH!
oh and I think she has potentially found me a ukrainian husband so there is that...
gave her a book of mormon and taught her how to pray because she did not know. it was great and we will meet to teach her the gospel.

PS: I am now a brunette. Just because.

OK AND GIANT SURPRISE OF THE WEEK IS....
I just got the news that in a week and a half I will begin training a new American sister. MY HEART IS READY TO DIE. It is 100% nuts. I really hope I do not accidentally kill her. I do not think I am ready at ALL!!!! please pray for this girl. SHE NEEDS A STRONG TRAINER and I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT IS ME.
As for Sister McDermott she is leaving Odessa and going to Kyiv and she will become an office sister with Sister Rubio! WOW! We were not expecting any of this. ALSO all the elders in our entire mission even the 6 month old elder will be training, we have that many new elders coming in. And it is a good thing too because our mission has SO FEW missionaries.

I AM NOT A TRAINER AAAAAAAAH!

Well that about wraps it up for the week.

Love you and I am praying for you. I will be ok and take care of myself and I will train I guess. Sometimes God does some crazy things and we just need to align with His will. I am trying to learn patience and to listen and trust Him. BUT I AM A LITTLE BIT AFRAID!!!!!!!!

“Fear and Love”
Ukraine Kyiv Mission
7 Sep 2015
“Quote: “Therefore, let your hearts be comforted; for all things shall work together for good to them that walk uprightly...” D&C 100:15
Dear Elders and Sisters,
I asked the Mehrs to write the letter this week. It is wonderful. We are so proud at how focused everyone is on leaving behind a good area for the new missionaries. We have seen miracles in the last few weeks with investigators! Keep it up. Sister Packer and I will be in Tallin this week for Training for Mission Presidents and Wives so the Assistants will be in charge. Keep the momentum going!
Fear and Love
One of the greatest impediments to missionary work is fear. It occurs when we face the unknown and wonder what we will do or what will happen next. Fear causes stress which is physically manifested as anxiety, tiredness, headaches, and a host of other undesirable results. As an Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz wrote, “Fear does not prevent death, it prevents life.” If we do not control fear, it controls us.
Fear comes from the natural being in which our spirit is housed. It is self-focused. It is the expectation that the worse always happens, something that is rarely the case. It is a weakness common to all.
The divinity within has the capacity to control fear and turn it into excitement. Fear is a negative response to the unknown. It is the same emotion as excitement, which is a positive response to the unknown.
Love vanquishes fear. Indeed, fear is the absence of love. When controlled by fear we are being acted upon. When motivated by love we are acting--creating a world of beauty, spirituality, unity, bliss, and delight.
Excitement for spreading the gospel comes from love. It gives us the confidence to face the unknown knowing that God loves us, regardless of how others respond, and that he is directing our life. This type of love is built on scripture study, prayer, fasting, and service.

Love comes from the spirit being within. Love is outward focused. It is the expectation that the angels surrounding us and tending to those we meet can influence our decisions and actions as well as their decisions and actions; that things will always turn out well and to the greatest good of all. It is a power common to all who seek to be saints.
Doctrine and Covenants 100:15 “Therefore, let your hearts be comforted; for all things shall work together for good to them that walk uprightly...”
So this is the challenge: To lovingly recognize the opportunity to touch the life of another with the gospel message, to pray for this to happen and to patiently live until this righteous desire is fulfilled. May we live daily in humility, faith, hope, and charity so that in our missionary efforts the weakness of fear becomes the strength of love.
Love,
President and Sister Packer

Parents

Parents,

Because this is the first major event in a while here in Kyiv, we thought we would send out a quick email.  Everything here in the mission is fine.  Yesterday, there was a group of radical Ukrainians who threw grenades at police after a decision to give more autonomy to the break off regions of Ukraine.  It has been condemned by everyone with any sense and will probably help the stability.  We will see.  All of the missionaries are safe and continuing the Lords work.  We are so lucky to be serving in a place and time where the comfort of the gospel is so desperately needed.  It is amazing to see the direction and hope the gospel brings under trying circumstances.

Here is a copy of the text we sent to missionaries yesterday.

"You may be hearing about an incident today in Kiev. Here is what we know. In Kyiv there were deadly clashes between protesters and police after a vote by parliament to give more autonomy to the regions under control of the DNR.  The protesters were unhappy with the results. A grenade was thrown by one of the protesters who has been arrested.  The situation seems to be calming down but let's use caution.  Please stay away from the Kyiv city center.  Let's also use this opportunity to review safety protocols. You should always have with you your documents.  Make sure you have your emergency cash. Keep your phone charged and answer all calls from your leaders.  Avoid large crowds.  You will find protection from both physically and spiritual danger following with exactness the commandments and mission rules.  There is nothing to fear.  D&C 84:88 "...for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up."

We have missionaries serving here in Kyiv that are from the disputed regions where fighting continues. They worry about the safety of their families.  And when they don’t receive emails from them they can become very concerned. We have learned that you can come to know how they are doing through email, a phone call, or through prayer.  Sometimes prayer is the only communication line open.  You can do the same with your missionaries here.  If you have worries or doubts, The Lord can let you know.

We love your children. We are grateful for your prayers.

Warmly,

President Packer
Ukraine Kyiv Mission
